After a Hail or Wind Storm in Fayette County, GA: A First-Week Checklist

Storms move through Fayette, Coweta, Henry, Clayton and Spalding counties every year. The days right after a storm are when homeowners make the decisions that matter most for their claim and their home. Here is a simple checklist to work through.

1. Stay safe first

Stay off the roof. Keep clear of downed lines and leaning limbs, and call your utility company about any damaged service lines. If water is coming inside, move belongings away from it and catch drips where you can safely do so.

2. Photograph everything from the ground

Take date-stamped photos of the roof, gutters, siding, windows, screens, fences, cars and anything else that was hit. Hail dents on gutters, downspouts and vents are often easier to see from the ground than damage to shingles. Photograph any interior water stains too.

3. Prevent further damage

Most homeowner policies expect you to take reasonable steps to stop more damage, such as tarping an opening. Keep receipts for anything you buy. Read your own policy, or ask your agent, for the specifics that apply to you.

4. Call your insurance company

Report the claim and write down the claim number, your adjuster's name and the date of the inspection. Your adjuster works for the insurance company and decides what the policy covers.

5. Get a written inspection

A roofing contractor can inspect the roof surface, flashing, vents and decking and give you photos and a written scope to share with your adjuster. Be wary of anyone who offers to waive or cover your deductible, asks you to sign over your claim, or pressures you to sign on the spot.

6. Compare written scopes before you sign

Ask for an itemized estimate, compare it with the adjuster's report, and do not sign a contract until you understand what work is included and when it will start.
