For veterans living with a service-connected disability, the right home modifications can make daily life safer and more independent. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs offers several programs that can help pay for accessibility changes. Here is a plain-language overview for veterans and families in McDonough, Stockbridge, Hampton and across Henry County.
This article is general information only. Eligibility, amounts and approval are decided by the VA. Always confirm current details directly with the VA.
Specially Adapted Housing (SAH) grant
The SAH grant is for veterans and service members with certain severe service-connected disabilities, such as the loss of use of both legs. It can help build, buy or change a home to meet the veteran's needs, for example by adding ramps, widening doorways or creating an accessible bathroom.
Special Housing Adaptation (SHA) grant
The SHA grant is for veterans with certain other qualifying service-connected disabilities, such as some vision or hand impairments. It can help adapt a home to improve mobility and independence.
Home Improvements and Structural Alterations (HISA) grant
HISA can help pay for medically necessary changes to a home, such as improving entrance access, lowering counters or making a bathroom accessible. It is available to veterans with service-connected disabilities and to some veterans with non-service-connected conditions, based on medical need. HISA requests generally go through the veteran's VA health care team.
How to get started
- Visit VA.gov and search for disability housing grants and the HISA program.
- Talk with your VA health care provider or a VA social worker about the changes you need.
- Reach out to a Veterans Service Officer for free help with applications.
- Keep copies of every form, letter and estimate in one place.
How a contractor fits in
Grant programs typically require a clear description of the work and written cost estimates. A detailed home assessment, with measurements and an itemized estimate, gives you something concrete to share with your VA team. The VA decides eligibility, approval and any requirements for who can do the work, so confirm those details before signing a contract.
